ICYMI: Rep. Gillen Joins Cancer Survivors and Advocates for Roundtable Discussion

The discussion, organized by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), focused on Rep. Gillen’s advocacy in Congress for patients and families.

WESTBURY, NY – On Tuesday, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) joined a group of cancer survivors, volunteers and advocates for roundtable discussions on how she can continue to improve the lives of cancer patients and their families. The conversation centered on improving patient care and preventing life-threatening cancer diagnoses with early screenings,
preventative care and medical coverage for patients.

“We were honored to be able to have the opportunity to speak with Representative Gillen,” said Victor LaBozzetta, a volunteer with ACS CAN. “She has not only been responsive to our concerns but has advocated for real legislative change for us. We feel confident that with her support we can end cancer as we know it in our lifetime.

According to the ACS, approximately 1 in 3 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their
lifetime. Rep. Gillen is a proud advocate for medical research and funding and will continue to fight to deliver backing for essential programs.

“I couldn’t be more proud to fight alongside the American Cancer Society for critical healthcare and research funding.,” said Representative Gillen. “When the Administration tried to politicize cancer research funding, I led a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers in a letter criticizing the decision and calling for its reconsideration. I’ll continue fighting to protect funding and resources so lifesaving medical research and programs can continue. No patient or family should have to face these diagnoses alone.”

Rep. Gillen has an extensive record of advocacy for cancer patients and families including standing up against cuts for cancer research and pushing Administration officials to expand coverage of cancer screenings. Rep. Gillen proposed the Clean Water Amendment to stop cancer-causing PFAS in local water and is an original cosponsor of the Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act to allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for more Americans.

Rep. Gillen has fought for and delivered millions of dollars in cancer research funding that will support lifesaving, groundbreaking research, drive economic growth and support the next breakthrough to help find a cure to cancer.
