ICYMI: Newsday Editorial Board Endorses Rep. Laura Gillen for Congress, Writes Glowing Review of Gillen’s Accomplishments

“She can bring a moderate voice with a bipartisan bent to the table,”

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – On October 13th, Newsday’s Editorial Board released its formal endorsement of Rep. Laura Gillen for New York’s Fourth Congressional District. Rep. Gillen previously received their endorsement in her campaigns for Congress in 2022 and 2024, and her races for Town of Hempstead Supervisor in 2017 and 2019.

“I’m grateful to once again receive the endorsement of Newsday’s Editorial Board.” Rep. Gillen said. “A free press is an essential part of our democracy, and I appreciate Newsday’s work keeping Long Islanders informed.”

The endorsement opens with the detailed story of Rep. Gillen’s strategic fight to push her first bill, a bipartisan measure to extend Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for tax-paying, law-abiding Haitian immigrants, to the floor for a vote and eventual passage in the House.

“It’s a story that illustrates the tenacity and resilience that Gillen, 57, brought to her first two years in the House.”

The endorsement details Rep. Gillen’s deep understanding of the district and her commitment to delivering for the people of Long Island.

“Gillen understands those communities’ needs, from water infrastructure upgrades in the Village of Hempstead to long-sought renovations for the Lakeview Library.

But she also has a deep, thoughtful understanding of the nation’s broader challenges, pointing to a variety of Trump administration policies that, she says, have done ‘so much damage,’…She provides a clear road map on how to undo that damage, which, she said, is key to lowering costs and improving lives in CD4.”

When writing of Rep. Gillen’s opponent, Jeanine Driscoll, Newsday writes that she has “few new ideas” for how she could deliver as a representative for Nassau County and doubled down on her allegiance to President Trump.

“Driscoll told the editorial board that she cannot think of anything President Donald Trump has said or done with which she disagrees…Driscoll said she supports the war in Iran and called tariffs ‘the price of doing business,’ arguing that she hasn’t seen a negative impact on constituents.”

The endorsement closes with a commendation of Rep. Gillen’s strategic bipartisanship to deliver for NY-04.

“Gillen emphasizes that if Democrats win the majority, they’ll have to put policy over politics. She can bring a moderate voice with a bipartisan bent to the table, to move forward her more sweeping priorities in healthcare, immigration reform and affordability, and the more specific bills and funding asks that could intimately help her district. To succeed, Gillen will need to do both.

Newsday Opinion endorses Gillen.”
